A VISIT TO ART 21

My friend and I had tried a few times to visit this gallery and failed. It was almost like it was repelling us. The instagram photos we saw of the space were so magnificent we definitely did not plan to give up. Finally, we made it. Yes it was as beautiful!

I went there a few days after my birthday, so this has been since January 2020. Yes, it is a super late blog post but I’m happy to finally be sharing my thoughts even though I might have forgotten the experience.lol

Why did I go? Mostly to see for myself what I had been seeing all over the internet and of course take bomb photos. This exhibition was one of the most beautifully curated ones I had seen in a while. I was not even sure of the artists exhibiting before I went there.

It was curated by Caline Chagoury and the exhibiting artists were all linked to the African continent one way or another. To be honest, I don’t understand much about how they selected the artists. It felt very elite yet like the lines were blurred.

Getting there, I was really impressed with the interior design of the space and curation of the pieces. There was a small room that had some very weird looking objects for sale, we really could not tell what they were for. Surprisingly, I saw some familiar artists and designers like Uthman Wahaab, Studio Lani and Ile Ila. My favourite pieces were the photographs by Medina Dugger and the funny looking baskets.

My friend did not really see the point to this exhibition and I understand why. I was just really inspired by the colours and the fact that African art can be presented in a non-stereotypical way.

Did you ever see the exhibition before the lockdown? I heard Cardi B stopped by at Floor 9! I wonder if she bought any art. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below
